Episode Review: Episode 1, The Treasure
Of Grundo
Following the outline of "The Airship" storybook, Episode One- The Treasure of Grundo- features Teddy and Grubby traveling from their
homeland of Rillonia to Grundo in search of treasure and adventure. They meet Newton Gimmick, a local inventor
who is out for a afternoon stroll, and they quickly make friends. Gimmick invites them over for lunch, and it's then
that we meet Tweeg for the first time. Tweeg sees the trio conversing and assumes that they
are forming an Army to steal his recipe for turning Buttermilk into Gold.
Gimmick shows the duo from Rillonia his most recent invention- an Airship, which Grubby says really looks more like a boat.
Gimmick admits it started out to be just that, but then he realized he wasn't very close to water. So, after a long-winded
explanation, he explains that he instead filled a large airbag with hot air, placed it under the boat, in an attempt to
get it to rise off the ground and become a flying vehicle.
FUNNY QUOTE (Grubby talking about Gimmick's rambling) "It looks like
this isn't the only thing that runs on hot air."

Teddy and Grubby agree to let Gimmick have a share of the treasure
if they all can use his airship to find it, although Gimmick doesn't seem to be overly concerned with treasure, he
doesn't disagree- and they begin to lift off. However, as Grubby puts it, "Something doesn't seem quite right" and the
Aiship flips and crashes. After the impact, everyone is alright and comes to the surface. There to greet them is Leota,
a Woodsprite who has ownership of the tree they have just crashed into. After briefly scolding them, Leota softens when
Teddy offers that she is very pretty. Despite Gimmick's assertion that Woodsprites- and therefore Leota- doesn't exist,
She begins to give Gimmick a lesson in flying, when Gimmick protests-
"Now see here you little, 'eh, Sprite, There's nothing you can teach me about flying!" at which point Leota begins to fly
herself. Somewhat humbled, Gimmick begins to listen. She explains the airbag should be over the ship, not under it,
and that they will have a much more successful flight if they follow her guidelines. They thank her and offer her a
piece of the treasure and a seat for the journey. "I Have all the treasures I need right here, besides, a scientist
wouldn't want to be seen with a creature who doesn't exist."

Earlier in the episode, the trio had been accosted by the Bounders, and during the melee, Gimmick began
stuffing wooden posts into their mouths to keep them from biting. While doing that, he accidentally put the teasure
map in L.B.'s mouth, and Tweeg finds it, duplicates it with a fake map, and has L.B. bring the fake map back. The trio
are nearly halfway to the treasure when they find out that they have been fooled by a phony treasure map. Nearly out of
fuel, and lost, the trio realize they are about to crash-land in the desert!
MY REVIEW:
Overall, a very good first episode. The animation, as sometimes seen in the first and middle blocks of episodes, is at
times off-center. This episode, as is the book it shadows (The Airship) is a very good introduction to The World of Teddy,
and, as I did through the entire series, found the writing in this episode to be very humorous on a level both funny to
children and adults. My favorite quote from the whole episode is when L.B. is discussing Fobs- "They're always so helpful, friendly
and loyal! I hate that in an animal!"
