Comparison of the YES! Entertainment (1998) and BACKPACK TOYS (2006) Teddy Ruxpin versions

For much more in-depth coverage of all versions of the talking dolls, visit the Teddy Ruxpin FAQ Mathue has a lot of info on inner workings, etc. of most of the versions and he's also got comparisons of the Worlds of Wonder and Yes! versions there.

As you can see in the photo above and the photos below, Size is one of the only similarites between the most recent two Teddy Ruxpin releases, most all other aspects of the talkers are much different. I have always had a problem keeping the fur on my Yes! TeddyIII clean, there just isn't much there to clean and the fur seems to get matted rather than appear fresh and fluffy after a cleaning like my WoW version always did

A Side view of the two versions

The versions also have radically different functional keys, with the Yes! Teddy having a rather complex tape player that is sometmies difficult for even an adult to handle, (Me, Haha) while the new BackPack version has very simple controls that a child can easily figure out. The one common control both versions had is the one-press button for volume control, rather than the radio-style control the WoW version had to turn Teddy up and down in volume. BackPack's version, (or TeddyIV) also has brighter eyes and generally a more lively appearance than the Yes! doll, which was plagued by underfunding and corporate mismanagment. TeddyIV also is the closest version we've had in appearance to the original since WoW closed up shop.

The controls of TeddyIV,(BackPack version) left, and TeddyIII, right.

Most obvious is the change in uniform. TeddyIII's red shirt and "blue jeans" never quite hit it off with me, or most fans, as Teddy had more of a sense of adventure in his tunic, which TeddyIV wears proudly, complete with the Teddy Ruxpin logo as also seen in the WoW and Playskool versions.

A couple more views of the two most recent TR releases

In addition, TeddyIII's mouth and "jaw" area are more hard and ridgid than the softer feel and look of TeddyIV. In addition to the fur being much softer and cleaner in appearance, it's also a little lighter in TeddyIV, closer to that of the original. The "Paws" and arms are also more uniform and TeddyIV generally just has a cleaner, more uniform, sleek appearance.

Although TeddyIII had it's place, it was certainly great to have Teddy back in any form after such a long hibernation, I'm glad Teddy is back in top form with the new release from BackPack Toys and I definately can recomend purchasing a TeddyIV in ways I never could with the previous version.
